Catholic Church Runs 41.8 Percent of Domestic Welfare Facilities

  The 2001 Report of Caritas Coreana (President: Most Rev. Gabriel Chang) on the actual situation of the Catholic-run social welfare facilities has indicated that the welfare facilities run by the Catholic increased in number between 1999 and 2000.
   According to the survey the Catholic-run welfare facilities totaled to 524 in 1999 while to 615 in 2000 which shows an increase of 17.4% over 1999. As of August 2000, the Catholic Church runs 615(41.8%) out of the 1,473 domestic welfare facilities. 
   The survey shows; the parish-run welfare facilities including shelters increased from 20(3.8%) in 1999 to 31(5%); the diocese-run welfare facilities from 126(24.9%) in 1999 to 189(30.7%) in 2000; the religious institute-run welfare facilities from 227 in 1999 to 268 in 2000; total number of Catholics who are engaged in social welfare are 5,788.
   "The survey has shown the Catholic Church's concerns for the needy people," a Caritas Coreana official remarked.
